Experiment 19
Broadcast your own terms
What does it involve?
Create simple ways of regularly and consistently letting others know your own expectations around communication and availability.
From the Digital Habit Lab
A card deck of 50 bite-sized experiments to disrupt your digital habits and take control of your tech, for increased wellbeing, creativity and productivity.
Launching on Kickstarter early 2022.

Why do it?
- Help others understand and respect your own needs when communicating with you by stating your expectations openly.
- Reduce anxiety that comes from being unsure if others understand why you are communicating in a particular way.
- Learn other’s needs in the process and make your communication more effective by reducing opportunities for misunderstandings.
How does it work?
- Take some time to write down for your self any non-negotiables, boundaries, expectations etc around how you want to communicate.
- Summarise your terms into a succinct statement that is 140 characters or less. Update your status in messaging apps to share them with others.
- Do your absolute best to be consistent in sticking to your own terms, and initiate conversations with others to find out their own terms.
Tips
Fitting your terms in 140 characters is almost impossible, so you could use them to link to a webpage which gives you more space to list out your terms—however still keep it short else others will never read it! Alternatively create a custom profile photo which includes text with your terms in it; this will give you a few more characters to work with and also make it easy for people to find. However you do it, add humour to keep it light!
